Contemporary Masters
of the Western Desert
- Wednesday 8th August - Sunday 19th August 2007 Mary Place Gallery, 12 Mary Place, Paddington, NSW To be opened by Bruce Haigh
Bruce Haigh is a former diplomat who served in South
Africa from 1976-79, Pakistan 1972-73 and 1986-88, Saudi
Arabia 1982-84, Iran 1984, and Sri Lanka 1994.
Bruce is a political commentator, writer, author and
olive and wine grower.
While serving in South
Africa Bruce helped the banned newspaper editor, Donald
Woods, escape from South Africa. His role in this
escape was portrayed in the film "Cry Freedom" produced
by Lord Richard Attenborough and seen by millions around
the world.
Bruce was instrumental in
helping to set up the Ifa Lethu Foundation as an
institution to locate, repatriate and curate South
African works of art taken out of the country during the
years of apartheid. In July 2005 his extensive
collection of black South African Art was donated back
to the people of South Africa through Ifa Lethu.
This was a magnificent undertaking and one for which the
people are thankful as this is art of an important
period in the history of South Africa and would have
been lost to the world forever.
